HSK 2 is where many learners stall: the vocabulary doubles, the listening speeds up, and pinyin disappears from the reading section. The good news — it is still a compact, predictable exam. With a focused 4–8 week plan, most learners who passed HSK 1 can pass HSK 2 on the first attempt. Here is how.
What HSK 2 actually is
HSK 2 is the second level of the official Chinese proficiency exam (HSK 2.0 format). The key numbers:
300 words— the 150 HSK 1 words plus 150 new ones.60 questions— 35 listening and 25 reading, all multiple choice.About 55 minutes— roughly 30 minutes of listening (including answer-transfer time) and 22 minutes of reading.120/200 to pass— listening and reading are each scored out of 100.
No handwriting, no speaking, no grammar terminology — just recognition. Every question is written using only the 300-word list, so vocabulary coverage is still your biggest lever.
A 4–8 week study plan
Weeks 1–2: Learn the 150 new words
Add 10–15 new words a day and review old ones with spaced repetition. The new HSK 2 words extend everyday HSK 1 topics — family (哥哥, 姐姐, 丈夫, 妻子), time (早上, 小时, 去年), travel (宾馆, 机场, 公共汽车) — so learn them next to the HSK 1 words they relate to. Our HSK 2 vocabulary guide groups all 150 by theme.
Weeks 3–4: Drill question types
Work through practice questions by type instead of random order. Listening has four parts (dialogue judgments, picture matching, dialogue comprehension, longer exchanges); reading has four parts (fill-in-the-blank, matching, sentence ordering by meaning, and short passages). Each part rewards a slightly different skill — find your weakest one early.
Weeks 5–6: Fix weak spots
Redo every missed question and keep a mistakes notebook. Common HSK 2 traps: similar-sounding words (四/十, 买/卖), time arithmetic (现在两点，电影三点开始), and connector logic with 因为…所以… and 虽然…但是….
Weeks 7–8: Timed mock exams
Take at least three full mock exams under real time limits. You are ready when you score 140+ twice in a row — comfortably above the 120 pass line.
Listening vs reading strategy
Listening (35 questions): recordings play twice. Answer on the first play, confirm on the second — never wait for the second play to start thinking. Preview the options before each recording: they tell you whether to listen for a time, a place or a person. In dialogues, the answer usually comes from the second speaker.
Reading (25 questions): no pinyin, so character recognition speed matters. Do the easy fill-in-the-blank and matching questions first, then spend your remaining time on the short passages at the end — they carry the most reading load. If a sentence looks long, find the verb first; HSK 2 word order is predictable.
Mock exam tactics
- Simulate the real timing: about 30 minutes for listening, 22 for reading, no pausing the audio.
- Never leave blanks — there is no penalty for guessing, and eliminating even one wrong option doubles your odds.
- Review every wrong answer the same day; write down why the correct option is correct, not just which one it was.
- Track your section scores separately. Passing needs 120/200 total, so a weak section can be carried by a strong one — but only if you know which is which.
