HSK 2: The Complete Guide

What is HSK 2?

HSK 2 is the second level of the official Chinese proficiency test for non-native speakers. It certifies that you can communicate in simple, routine exchanges on familiar everyday topics — shopping, weather, transport, hobbies — using straightforward sentences.

Vocabulary: 300 words

HSK 2 adds 150 new words on top of the HSK 1 list, bringing the total to 300. The new words expand everyday situations: adjectives like 贵 (expensive), 忙 (busy) and 远 (far), verbs like 帮助 (to help), 希望 (to hope) and 开始 (to start), and nouns like 机场 (airport), 天气 (weather) and 颜色 (color). Every question stays inside the 300-word list.

Exam structure

• Listening — 35 questions, ~25 minutes. Each recording plays twice.
• Reading — 25 questions, ~22 minutes. All text stays within the 300-word list.
• Total 60 questions, 200 points. You pass with 120 points (60%).
• Duration about 55 minutes, including 5 minutes to fill in answers.

How to prepare

If you have passed HSK 1, expect 1–3 months of study for HSK 2. Learn the 150 new words, then practice longer dialogues — HSK 2 listening questions often hinge on a detail in a two-turn exchange, such as a time, a price or a place. Build reading speed with short passages and finish with full timed mock exams to lock in your pacing.
